February 2018 Monthly Meeting Report

Before the presentation Yo-Han gave an update on the NUPG GNDS Print Competition along with finalising arrangements of who was doing what and when with regards to setting up, manning and dismantling of our stand at The Great Northern Dive Show.  An update of what speakers have currently been booked and also Dive Days that are being arranged in addition to the usual monthly meetings as well as other various dive trips that had spare spaces available.

Another good turnout this month to listen to Ken Byrne and his presentation of North Wales Diving. His illustrated talk focused on 4 dive venues and showed what could be found at the various sites as well as practical information of getting there, the state of tides to dive the sites at their best and best entry and exit points as well as where to park and offload dive kit. The 4 sites discussed were Porth Ysgaden, Trefor Pier before the pier demolition, The Menai Straits and Holyhead Harbour.

By the end of his very interesting talk many people in the room were itching to get back into the seas and visit or revisit these and other sites around the North Wales Coast and get their own photos of everything from Cat Sharks to Butterfish, Dahlia Anenomes, Jewel Anenomes, Hydroids and Seapens as well as lobsters both common and squat and numerous types of crabs and nudibranchs and keep their eyes peeled for the blue rayed limpets.

The Monthly Competition was “Selfies” and as such it proved to be very amusing

The winners of each category were:

Open Winner – Alex Tasker with Sealion on Snorkel

Open Runner-Up – Caroline Robertson-Brown “Is this my Best Side?”

Open 3rd – Nick Robertson-Brown with Needlefish snapping bubbles

Compact Winner (although there were only 2 entries!) – Maggie Russell “Waiting for the Sardine Run”
